2025-09-08ipmi: Allow an SMI sender to return an errorCorey Minyard
Getting ready for handling when a BMC is non-responsive or broken, allow the sender operation to fail in an SMI. If it was a user-generated message it will return the error. The powernv code was already doing this internally, but the way it was written could result in deep stack descent if there were a lot of messages queued. Have its send return an error in this case. 2025-05-07ipmi:ssif: Fix a shutdown raceCorey Minyard
It was possible for the SSIF thread to stop and quit before the kthread_stop() call because ssif->stopping was set before the stop. So only exit the SSIF thread is kthread_should_stop() returns true. There is no need to wake the thread, as the wait will be interrupted by kthread_stop(). Signed-off-by: Corey Minyard <cminyard@mvista.com>

2024-12-01Get rid of 'remove_new' relic from platform driver structLinus Torvalds
The continual trickle of small conversion patches is grating on me, and is really not helping. Just get rid of the 'remove_new' member function, which is just an alias for the plain 'remove', and had a comment to that effect: /* * .remove_new() is a relic from a prototype conversion of .remove(). * New drivers are supposed to implement .remove(). Once all drivers are * converted to not use .remove_new any more, it will be dropped. */ This was just a tree-wide 'sed' script that replaced '.remove_new' with '.remove', with some care taken to turn a subsequent tab into two tabs to make things line up. I did do some minimal manual whitespace adjustment for places that used spaces to line things up. Then I just removed the old (sic) .remove_new member function, and this is the end result. No more unnecessary conversion noise. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

2024-08-20ipmi:ssif: Improve detecting during probingCorey Minyard
If an IPMI SSIF device is probed and there is something there, but probably not an actual BMC, the code would just issue a lot of errors before it failed. We kind of need these errors to help with certain issues, and some of the failure reports are non-fatal. However, a get device id command should alway work. If that fails, nothing else is going to work and it's a pretty good indication that there's no valid BMC there. So issue and check that command and bail if it fails. Reported-by: Ivan T. 2024-07-08ipmi: Drop explicit initialization of struct i2c_device_id::driver_data to 0Uwe Kleine-König
These drivers don't use the driver_data member of struct i2c_device_id, so don't explicitly initialize this member. This prepares putting driver_data in an anonymous union which requires either no initialization or named designators. But it's also a nice cleanup on its own. While at it, also remove commas after the sentinel entries. 2024-04-17ipmi: ipmi_ssif: Convert to platform remove callback returning voidUwe Kleine-König
The .remove() callback for a platform driver returns an int which makes many driver authors wrongly assume it's possible to do error handling by returning an error code. However the value returned is ignored (apart from emitting a warning) and this typically results in resource leaks. To improve here there is a quest to make the remove callback return void. In the first step of this quest all drivers are converted to .remove_new(), which already returns void. Eventually after all drivers are converted, .remove_new() will be renamed to .remove(). Trivially convert this driver from always returning zero in the remove callback to the void returning variant. 2023-09-13ipmi: refactor deprecated strncpyJustin Stitt
`strncpy` is deprecated for use on NUL-terminated destination strings [1]. In this case, strncpy is being used specifically for its NUL-padding behavior (and has been commented as such). Moreover, the destination string is not required to be NUL-terminated [2]. We can use a more robust and less ambiguous interface in `memcpy_and_pad` which makes the code more readable and even eliminates the need for that comment. Let's also use `strnlen` instead of `strlen()` with an upper-bounds check as this is intrinsically a part of `strnlen`. Also included in this patch is a simple 1:1 change of `strncpy` to `strscpy` for ipmi_ssif.c. If NUL-padding is wanted here as well then we should opt again for `strscpy_pad`. 2023-06-20ipmi: Change request_module to request_module_nowaitCorey Minyard
When probing for an ACPI-specified IPMI device, the code would request that the acpi_ipmi module be loaded ACPI operations through IPMI can be performed. This could happen through module load context, for instance, if an I2C module is loaded that caused the IPMI interface to be probed. This is not allowed because a synchronous module load in this context can result in an deadlock, and I was getting a warning: [ 23.967853] WARNING: CPU: 0 PID: 21 at kernel/module/kmod.c:144 __request_module+0x1de/0x2d0 [ 23.968852] Modules linked in: i2c_i801 ipmi_ssif The IPMI driver is not dependent on acpi_ipmi, so just change the called to request_module_nowait to make the load asynchronous. 2023-06-20ipmi:ssif: Fix a memory leak when scanning for an adapterCorey Minyard
The adapter scan ssif_info_find() sets info->adapter_name if the adapter info came from SMBIOS, as it's not set in that case. However, this function can be called more than once, and it will leak the adapter name if it had already been set. So check for NULL before setting it. 2023-04-12ipmi:ssif: Drop if blocks with always false conditionUwe Kleine-König
For both variants (platform and i2c driver) after a successful bind (i.e. .probe completed without error) driver data is set to a non-NULL value. So the return value of i2c_get_clientdata and dev_get_drvdata respectively are not NULL and so the if blocks are never executed. 2023-04-12ipmi: fix SSIF not responding under certain cond.Zhang Yuchen
The ipmi communication is not restored after a specific version of BMC is upgraded on our server. The ipmi driver does not respond after printing the following log: ipmi_ssif: Invalid response getting flags: 1c 1 I found that after entering this branch, ssif_info->ssif_state always holds SSIF_GETTING_FLAGS and never return to IDLE. As a result, the driver cannot be loaded, because the driver status is checked during the unload process and must be IDLE in shutdown_ssif(): while (ssif_info->ssif_state != SSIF_IDLE) schedule_timeout(1); The process trigger this problem is: 1. One msg timeout and next msg start send, and call ssif_set_need_watch(). 2. ssif_set_need_watch()->watch_timeout()->start_flag_fetch() change ssif_state to SSIF_GETTING_FLAGS. 3. In msg_done_handler() ssif_state == SSIF_GETTING_FLAGS, if an error message is received, the second branch does not modify the ssif_state. 4. All retry action need IS_SSIF_IDLE() == True. Include retry action in watch_timeout(), msg_done_handler(). Sending msg does not work either. SSIF_IDLE is also checked in start_next_msg(). 5. The only thing that can be triggered in the SSIF driver is watch_timeout(), after destory_user(), this timer will stop too. So, if enter this branch, the ssif_state will remain SSIF_GETTING_FLAGS and can't send msg, no timer started, can't unload. We did a comparative test before and after adding this patch, and the result is effective. 2022-08-16i2c: Make remove callback return voidUwe Kleine-König
The value returned by an i2c driver's remove function is mostly ignored. (Only an error message is printed if the value is non-zero that the error is ignored.) So change the prototype of the remove function to return no value. This way driver authors are not tempted to assume that passing an error to the upper layer is a good idea. All drivers are adapted accordingly. There is no intended change of behaviour, all callbacks were prepared to return 0 before. 2019-12-23ipmi:ssif: Handle a possible NULL pointer referenceCorey Minyard
In error cases a NULL can be passed to memcpy. The length will always be zero, so it doesn't really matter, but go ahead and check for NULL, anyway, to be more precise and avoid static analysis errors. Reported-by: kbuild test robot <lkp@intel.com> Signed-off-by: Corey Minyard <cminyard@mvista.com>
2019-08-22ipmi_ssif: avoid registering duplicate ssif interfaceKamlakant Patel
It is possible that SSIF interface entry is present in both DMI and ACPI tables. In SMP systems, in such cases it is possible that ssif_probe could be called simultaneously from i2c interface (from ACPI) and from DMI on different CPUs at kernel boot. Both try to register same SSIF interface simultaneously and result in race. In such cases where ACPI and SMBIOS both IPMI entries are available, we need to prefer ACPI over SMBIOS so that ACPI functions work properly if they use IPMI. So, if we get an ACPI interface and have already registered an SMBIOS at the same address, we need to remove the SMBIOS one and add the ACPI. Log: [ 38.774743] ipmi device interface [ 38.805006] ipmi_ssif: IPMI SSIF Interface driver [ 38.861979] ipmi_ssif i2c-IPI0001:06: ssif_probe CPU 99 *** [ 38.863655] ipmi_ssif 0-000e: ssif_probe CPU 14 *** [ 38.863658] ipmi_ssif: Trying SMBIOS-specified SSIF interface at i2c address 0xe, adapter xlp9xx-i2c, slave address 0x0 [ 38.869500] ipmi_ssif: Trying ACPI-specified SSIF interface at i2c address 0xe, adapter xlp9xx-i2c, slave address 0x0 [ 38.914530] ipmi_ssif: Unable to clear message flags: -22 7 c7 [ 38.952429] ipmi_ssif: Unable to clear message flags: -22 7 00 [ 38.994734] ipmi_ssif: Error getting global enables: -22 7 00 [ 39.015877] ipmi_ssif 0-000e: IPMI message handler: Found new BMC (man_id: 0x00b3d1, prod_id: 0x0001, dev_id: 0x20) [ 39.377645] ipmi_ssif i2c-IPI0001:06: IPMI message handler: Found new BMC (man_id: 0x00b3d1, prod_id: 0x0001, dev_id: 0x20) [ 39.387863] ipmi_ssif 0-000e: IPMI message handler: BMC returned incorrect response, expected netfn 7 cmd 42, got netfn 7 cmd 1 ... [NOTE] : Added custom prints to explain the problem. In the above log, ssif_probe is executed simultaneously on two different CPUs. This patch fixes this issue in following way: - Adds ACPI entry also to the 'ssif_infos' list. - Checks the list if SMBIOS is already registered, removes it and adds ACPI. - If ACPI is already registered, it ignores SMBIOS. - Adds mutex lock throughout the probe process to avoid race. 2019-04-24ipmi:ssif: compare block number correctly for multi-part return messagesKamlakant Patel
According to ipmi spec, block number is a number that is incremented, starting with 0, for each new block of message data returned using the middle transaction. Here, the 'blocknum' is data[0] which always starts from zero(0) and 'ssif_info->multi_pos' starts from 1. So, we need to add +1 to blocknum while comparing with multi_pos.
